19 May 1938: A young shale miner, Daniel Carey, who resided at Stable Row, Bathgate, lost his life in Westwood Shale Pit at West Calder yesterday. He was at work when he was crushed by a fall of material from the roof of the pit workings. [Scotsman 20 May 1938] FAI record – Daniel Carey, shale miner, 3 Stable Rows, Starlaw, by Bathgate, died on 19 May 1938 in Westwood Pit, Livingston Parish, West Lothian, when material fell from the roof on him.
