- Details of Event
- Died August 29th. Deceased, about 2pm on a Saturday, left Linton Colliery to walk along this private railway to Ashington, about 2.5 miles distant, rather than wait for this locomotive and workmen’s carriage. When he had proceeded about 1 mile his met the locomotive going tender first and drawing a workmen’s carriage at a speed of about 12 miles per hour. At this point is a level crossing and on this east side of the line are four stacks of rails, 45 feet long, built up to a height of 4 feet and within 12 inches of this rails at their base. There is a space between each stack. Deceased was aware of this locomotive and was seen to get on to one of these stacks of rails and to continue walking on it. The driver heard a noise after the locomotive had passed deceased, and looking round saw this last wheel of this workmen’s carriage go over him. He had either slipped and fallen off the rails or he had been caught by the step on the carriage. He was taken to Newcastle Infirmary where he died 5 days later.
