Details of Event
Whilst ascending the shaft in a small bucket with two other men carrying canister containing gelignite cartridges and two open petroleum torch lamps the latter in close contact with the canister the heat from the lights caused the gelignite to ignite. Deceased fell to the bottom of the shaft 15 yards the other two men were injured from burns.
