He was found at his place of work evidently suffering pain, and said he had been nipped between waggons. He ultimately went home and did not work again. He was seen at his home by his usual medical attendant, who did not then, or at any time later, find any mark of injury. On 25th November he was taken to Middlesborough Infirmary where he died on the 3rd December, the cause of death being given as Addison's disease. An inquest was held and a verdict returned that "he died from Addison's disease accelerated by an accident in Skelton Park Mine whilst following his employment’.
