- He hewed the back-end off, and in so doing removed the coal from beneath a cauldron-bottom 3 feet in diameter by 10 inches thick. The deputy had been in the place about two hours previous to the accident but had not seen any sign of the cauldron-bottom then. The timber was set well up to the face. The seam is thin and water runs down from the roof. These circumstances would render the detection of the cauldron-bottom more difficult than usual.
