Deceased was standing near the shaft watching a fireman, who was taking a tram of coal towards the pit, when a handspike, with which the latter was controlling the tram, struck a stop-block, flew forward, and knocked him into the shaft. He fell through a hole in sump-planks, 2 feet by 11 inches, to a landing 40 yards below.
