- Details of Event
- The quarry is in slate rock and the face is more than 100 feet high. It is worked intermittently but deceased and another quarryman had been working in it for a fortnight before the accident. The face had been examined during the summer and also before work was restarted and it appeared safe. Work was being carried on from a ledge about 30 feet from the floor of the quarry. Immediately before the accident a second shot had been fired consisting of about 1lb.of gunpowder in a hole 3 feet deep and deceased was climbing back to the ledge by means of a rope after the shot had exploded when about 150 tons of rock fell away from a face or slip to one side of the shot and commencing 10 feet above it. Deceased had nearly reached the ledge. He was knocked back and buried among the fallen stone in the bottom of the quarry.
