22 August 1929: Newtongrange Miner Killed - At the Lady Victoria Colliery, yesterday afternoon, William Burns, a young man, 27 Fifth Street Newtongrange, was killed by a fall from the roof, Alexander Russell, who was working beside Burns, was badly injured, and was removed to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
