18 March 1919: FATAL ACCIDENT TO MARKINCH MINER - A distressing accident occurred at Balgonie Pit, belonging to the Balgonie Colliery Company, resulting in the death of John Burns (30), miner, who resided at Stob Cross Road, Markinch. A heavy fall of coal took place, and Burns was struck on the head, death being practically instantaneous. He leaves a widow and two children. [Dundee Courier 19 March 1919]
