- Details of Event
- Died November 22. Deceased worked alone in a bord 6 yards wide in the Main Coal seam made up of top coal 3 feet 6 inches band 8 inches and bottom coal 1 foot 7 inches. He had in accordance with the usual practice worked forward on the bottom coal and band nearly across the place but the right nook was back. He had two or three short props under the top coal while working under it these he had withdrawn after drilling a shot hole in the top coal on the left side and nicking out the right side. The shot failed to bring down all the top coal leaving some hanging coal next the nicking. A fast shot had been fired in the bottom coal under this but when it was fired could not be ascertained. Deceased appears to have been working near this shot as his pick was there and he was found pinned against the bottom coal by a mass of the top coal 4 and 2.5 feet 10 inches thick which had fallen away from ordinary cleats and a parting above leaving 8 inches of coal sticking to the roof. It was suggested that as fast shots are forbidden deceased might have been engaged hewing away any evidence of it. In any case great want of caution was displayed in working near overhanging top coal shaken by a shot. The Inspectors reported, accidental, no blame attached anyone.
