After firing a (powder) shot in a small trial shaft about 18 yards deep he returned to the bottom. Finding that the gases were affecting him he got into the kibble and was being wound up when part way up he fell back again to the bottom. A comrade who went to his assistance found him insensible with a gash on the left side of the head. From the doctor's evidence death apparently resulted from the effects of the powder fumes (which contain carbonic acid).
