- 6 January 1936: Gas Explosion In Pit – Three Miners Injured - Three miners received injuries following an explosion of gas yesterday in No.5 Pit, East Whitburn, owned by Robert Forrester & Co. (Ltd) Two of the men, John Wood, Whitburn, and James Connell, Whiteside, Bathgate, were conveyed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary suffering from burns to the head and body. The third man, Robert Young, Knowehead, Blackburn, who sustained slight burns to the head, was treated at his own home. [Scotsman 7 January 1936]
