- Details of Event
- Deceased and his marrow were working on the last portion of a pillar of coal in the Main coal seam. The place was about 6 yards wide and was loose on both sides and the coal appears to have been crushed and would not stand much kyrving. While deceased was kyrving a few inches in at the left side, a mass of coal extending half way across the place fell from the upper 4 feet of the seam and caught him. It was relieved by a sparry cleat. The deputy had been in the place an hour before the accident and thought it safe. There was an ample supply of loose timber but the coal was so loose that spragging was hardly possible. The Local Inspectors reported, ‘It was a pure accident.’
