Details of Event
The only coal that to being worked at this colliery are the old pillars by the side of the engine place and as a consequence the road is constantly under repair. On the day in question two tubs had been filled with stone which in order to clear the plane had to be lowered into ii landing about 200 yards away. For 151 yards the gradient was 1 in 22 and the remainder 1 in 19 in favour of the tub and the lower portion of the rails were wet and greasy. Two men were instructed by the deputy to lower these tubs; they put two lockers in them and one of the men helped the other to push them away and then left the other to take the rest out of the way. The deceased and his mate were working at the top of the landing taking out low timber, and when the tubs got within 30 yards of them the man lost control of them and they ran amain and caught and killed Wilson. It was careless of one man to attempt to lower two tubs on such a gradient and under such conditions alone. He should have lowered them one at a time or there should have been one man for each tub.
