- Details of Event
- He was standing on a stull some 20 feet below the backs of an overhand stope preparing to cover with boards an opening in the stull, when a piece of ground, estimated to weigh about 10 cwts, fell from the backs and killed him instantly. After the fall it was seen that a slip formed the back of ground which fell. It was alleged that he had examined the ground by sounding it with a pipe, 1.2 inches in diameter by 8 feet 6 inches long, immediately before standing underneath. A ladder was at hand, and if deceased had taken the trouble to use it, a more reliable examination of the ground could have been made by sounding it with a hammer, and if this had been done, its weakness might have been revealed and steps taken to pull it down.
