He was filling coal in the face when clod, about 1 foot 8 inches thick, between the top and the bottom coals, broke over a sprag and fell upon him, causing his ribs to pierce the lung. The sprags had no lids or cuts, which would probably have prevented the clod breaking and falling as it did.
