A journey of 15 trams was being brought down from the quarry by a locomotive, when they were overtaken by a runaway tram which ran into the rear of the train and killed Williams and a boy who were riding in the last tram. The boy was not employed at the quarry, and had no business in the tram. What caused the tram to run away could not be discovered. Stop block and runaway points were promised to be fixed to prevent such an accident in future.
