- Details of Event
- While pushing an empty tram along one of two parallel sets of tramways, one foot apart, on a gantry, his tram collided at a pair of points with a train of four loaded two-ton trains travelling in the opposite direction by gravity over a crossing leading to the road on which he was tramming. He and the tram were knocked against the gantry fence, which yielded to the impact, and they fell 96 feet from the gantry on to a heap of loose stones. The front and rear rams of the train were each provided with an efficient brake, and each brake was in charge of a man. The front Brakesman alleged that before the train arrived at the crossing he warned deceased, by waving his hand, to take care and that deceased acknowledged the signal. Apparently the Brakesman and deceased thought they could just avoid a collision, consequently neither party gave way to the other. He succumbed to his injuries two days later.
