- Details of Event
- Deceased was cleaning up some coal that had fallen on the ground, about 3. feet from the shaft, when a piece of the scotch from the cage which had just been landed at the top fell on the sump planks, rebounded, and struck deceased on the forehead. He died in a short tune after. The force with which the last tram was run into the cage must have been great to have broken the scotch. Although it had been made by an experienced blacksmith I think he must have burnt the iron when welding it. The fracture, which was in the weld, must have been nearly complete when the cage arrived at the surface, and in drawing the scotch from in front of the tram, the pin broke off and fell through the bottom of the cage. I have not heard of a scotch breaking before.
