Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased and another person returned to the mouthing in the shaft after attending to the horses. Deceased opened the fence gate and appears to have walked into the shaft thinking probably that the cage was there and fell to the sump a distance of 30 yards and was killed. The steam rising in the shaft from the pump below made it more difficult to see whether the cage was there or not and the special lights were not there owing it was stated to the pit not winding coal at the time.
