- Details of Event
- When ten men were riding up the shaft in a cage, a receiving rod on the engine house side of the shaft became detached, fell from the surface, apparently in a vertical position, a distance of about 400 yards, and, piercing through the roof and the top deck floor of the ascending cage, killed four of the ten men in it. The rod was 27 feet long and was attached to baulks by bells and L pieces of iron. It would seem that during a previous wind an ascending cage most have caught the bottom of the rod and destroyed the fastenings. 4 killed.
