On the 17th or 18th of October, 1907, when assisting eight or nine men to lifted a heavy collar upon a pair of arms, where repairs were being carried out in the East District, he apparently strained himself, and complained at the time. To all appearances he seems to have been a robust man up to that. He continued his work, more or less regularly, for a month, when he failed, and gradually sank until his death on the 12th of May, 1908. The strain evidently acted upon some latent trouble (stone or otherwise) which, according to the medical evidence, brought about death.
