14 August 1928: Mining Accident at West Calder - Yesterday morning a young man named Robert Brown, residing at Seafield, Livingston , was severely injured in Breich Shale Pit, belonging to Scottish Oils (Ltd,), by a rake of runaway hutches. One of his legs was fractured and the other severely crushed. He was conveyed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. [Scotsman 15 August 1928] FAI record – Robert Brown, chain-runner, 116 Seafield Rows, by Bathgate, died on 14 August 1928 at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, from injuries sustained on the same day in Mid Breich Shale Pit, Parish of Livingston, West Lothian, when a rake of hutches ran away and he was crushed.
