His duty was to take empty and full trains along a level 250 yards in length, by attaching a clip to an endless rope, running under the tubs and then walking alongside the first tub between the two roads and at a point where there is a slight alteration in the gradient to take the clip off allow the tubs to run by gravity about 15 yards and attach the clip again and take it off at the end of the journey. When doing this he caught his toes against the edge of a sleeper and falling between the first and second tubs was killed.
