- The ascending full cage owing to oscillation caught under the descending cage at one corner, stopped the engine, engineman held the cages. Deceased went down another shaft to a mouthing below the cages, signalled for the empty tub cage to be lowered, together with the pit carpenter got on to the top of the cage, signalled to be raised, intending to examine the shaft and the other cage, after ascending about 15 yards a piece of iron fell from the other cage, struck deceased on the back of the head, killing him. It was subsequently found that a piece had been broken from the cage by the collision. It was foolish of deceased to ride under a cage which had been in violent collision.
