- He and his mate had filled four tubs with stone on the engine plane in the Dip District of the Barnsley Seam, and when the accident occurred he was lowering them by hand, in order that the stone might be used for packing in the workings. For a distance of about 10 yards the gradient 1 in 18, and then for 10 yards, where the floor has been ‘dinted,’ 1 in 9; on the former, in each tub one locker, and in the second portion of the road two lockers were required. He had lowered three of the tubs safely and taken the fourth one down to the place where the gradient increases by going in front of it, when he gave a locker who happened to he in a refuge hole close to, and told him to put it in, but before the lad could do so the locker wheel was already in broke, and the tub overpowered and knocked the deceased down and killed him. He engine plane will be lowered with the haulage rope should not have gone in front of the tubs and the locker he had put in was not an efficient one. In future any tubs on the engine plane will be lowered with the haulage rope.
