- Details of Event
- Some roof coal on a comparatively new level was being taken down on purpose to raise the rails that were lying on swampy ground. A haulage rope was at work at intervals on the level. On purpose to drop long lengths of roof coal, cuttings were made along the dip side of the heading and the roof coal was afterwards wedged down. After the last cutting was finished and deceased was about to put up a prop where the coal had drawn the roof, for 19 feet in length and 18 inches thick, fell, and killed deceased and injured another. The Timbering Rules require catch props to be set before doing repairs on roadways, but this had been neglected as such props would have interfered with the haulage. The deputy in charge had sounded the roof with a pick a few minutes prior to the accident, and was of opinion that it was sound.
