Details of Event
Deceased was employed at the stone cracker to keep the stone shoots from getting choked. He was visited frequently by the foreman in charge of the machinery. On this occasion the foreman was absent about 15 minutes, and on returning found deceased lying on his stomach on a short length of shafting which was in motion, and on the machinery being stopped he was found to be dead. His clothing in the region of the stomach was much torn, and five pieces of it were found all along the keyway of the shafting. The doctor attributed death to shock and asphyxia, the latter due to a scarf deceased was wearing having been drawn tight round the neck. The shafting was several yards from where deceased worked, and was 6 feet from thefloor, the roof rafters being 4 feet higher than the-shafting. It was thought deceased had climbed up to look for nests in the rafters.
