- Details of Event
- Deceased was killed by a heavy fall of clod from the roof in the Red Shagg Ironstone, whilst holing. The fall was 6ft. wide and about 12ft. long parallel to the face, and cause from two parallel slips which converged upwards coming together at a point 3ft. above the ordinary roof level. Two props were reeled by the fall. Falls of this description are by no means uncommon especially in the Red Shagg, and numerous fatalities have been caused by this. It behoves firemen and other officials, as well as the colliers themselves, to take special care in examining for the presence of these ‘pigbacks’ so as to be able to take steps to secure safety.
