This accident happened in the Parkgate inset of No.2 Pit. This inset was being enlarged preparatory to the inset arch being put in. The deceased was trimming coal off the side to prepare for the side walls when a piece of shale, about 2.5 cwts. in weight, fell from the roof, and killed him on the spot. The fall displaced two props and disclosed previously unseen converging slips forming a pothole. The place was well timbered.
