Deceased and his mate were enlarging and re-timbering the haulage downbrow, and after taking oat three old bars they proceeded to remove some dirt, and set two stretcher bars. While making room for the next bar a stone fell from the side at a joint near the roof and injured the deceased. He expired on April 29, under chloroform at the Wigan Infirmary prior to an operation.
