He had fired three shots in the coal and was about to connect up the shot-firing cable for a fourth, when about three tons of roof fell from two slips and killed him. Doubtless the roof had been shaken by the previous shots. One prop was required to bring the timbering within the specified distances but it is unlikely that this was directly responsible for the accident.
