He walked on to the sump boards to turn a syphon tap while the cages were in motion. He was struck by the descending cage and was severely injured. Arrangements were provided whereby the tap could he turned with-out entering the shaft. Had they been used the accident would not have happened. He died from blood poisoning on 30 May 1913 at Sheffield Royal Infirmary.
