- Details of Event
- A set of 10 wagons was being drawn up an incline, which is over 1000 yards in length, by means of a stationary hauling engine assisted by a locomotive pushing behind, the speed being about 3 miles per hour. It was dark but the top and bottom of the incline were lighted. Deceased was seen riding up the incline standing on the buffers of the first wagon, but was subsequently found lying between the rails about 30 yards from the top of the incline the wagons and loco. had passed over him, and the exhaust pipes of the latter had crushed him so severely that he died a few minutes later. At the incline op deceased would have to jump off to disconnect the rope from the wagons, and it was supposed be was changing his position on the buffer from standing to sitting preparatory to this when he slipped and fell between the rails.
