He was working in a longwall gateway in a seam 2 feet thick. Top stone is taken down in the gateway to make height. He was sitting hewing under the brow of the canch which was only overhanging the coal some 9 inches, when a piece of stone came over the coal head on to him severely injuring his leg, He died three days later.
