He was driving a 5-ton steam travelling crane, which was lifting and swinging around a 3.5-ton coil of rope. When the crane had swung around to an angle of 180 degrees, the crane and bogey tipped over sideways. Watson fell off and was caught and crushed by the footplate and killed. The crane had been worked at too great a speed, and the load was swinging at the time of turning. The bogey wheels should have been temporarily lashed to the rails.
