He was hewing in a longwall gateway in a seam 4 feet 6 inches thick, when a stone 7 feet long with an average width of 2 feet 9 inches, and 13 inches thick fell from the roof on to him and injured him so severely that he died shortly after being liberated. The maximum timbering distance was 6 feet and this was being exceeded at the place where the fall took place.
