At the top of the slant; while bringing up a "journey" of loaded trams, a pin of a "shackle" or coupling between the third and fourth trams snapped. Watkins, who was riding on the chain at the first tram was thrown underneath the trams by the jerk, and was run over. He died the same night at the Swansea Hospital.
