Died July 28. While deceased was nicking his jud of coal in a stenton 6 feet wide in the Six Quarter seam a piece of coal weighing about 20lb fell on to his left knee which was bare inflicting a cut about 1.73 inches long and 1 inch deep. No bleeding ensued and deceased was able to walk home. He was attended by a doctor and the wound cleaned and his leg bandaged. The wound gathered and deceased worked no more. On July 16, in consequence of blood poisoning having set in he was sent to Newcastle Infirmary where he died. He is stated to have been a healthy man. The Jury found that death was due to blood poisoning resulting from the injury.
