Deceased was filling coal into a tub at a longwall face 4.5ft in height, when a piece of clod 18uns by 15 ins by 3.5 ins at extremes fell from a previously unseen slip between two bars 3ft. 9ins. apart. It struck him on the back of the head as he stooped over his shovel, and knocked him against a prop, fracturing the base of the skull. He died on same evening. The stone had probably been shaken by some shots fired at 7am although the fireman who inspected the place shortly afterwards, failed to detect this.
