- Details of Event
- Deceased and another hewer were working in a longwall heading in a seam 3 feet 6 inches thick, having a "blue" roof, which in all the other working places in the district contained a large number of "chauldron pots." Deceased, had kirved in at the top of the seam for some 2 feet, when a large "chauldron pot" 5 feet 6 inches in diameter, with smooth slippery sides, 1 foot 6 inches, thick in the centre, tapering off to a feathery edge all ways, fell on to his back and killed him. The working, which was about 10 yards wide, was well timbered at the place where deceased was actually working, props and planks being regularly set at about 3 feet apart. There was no timber under the Stone that fell, and except for the end of a 6-foot plank which was broken off by the fall, there was no timber within 8 fact of the face. The maximum timbering distance allowed is 6 feet.
