- Details of Event
- Harold Ward was an Overman on tour of duty with Charles Douglas, setting explosives on a Sunday night for blasting on the Monday morning. Both men were qualified shot firers. On the Monday morning one of the explosives did not go off so the two men went back in to make the explosives safe. They exploded as the two reached them and Harold and Charles Douglas suffered severe injuries. Harold died 10 days later in hospital but Charles Douglas survived albeit with terrible scars.
