- He was pursuing his usual employment along with Jeremiah Sullivan, of 8, Victoria street and William Walmsley of Higher Twinch when a stone weighing 12 cwt. fell upon him from the roof completely burying him and killing him instantly. The stone had to be broken before the body could be removed. An inquiry into the fatality was conducted yesterday afternoon at the Black Dog Inn, Oswaldtwistle, by Mr. Robinson, the East Lancashire Coroner, and jury. Mr. Gerrard, the mines inspector, and Mr. Haworth managing director, of the Oswaldtwistle Collieries were also present. Sarah Ellen Walmsley, widow of the deceased gave evidence as to identification. She last saw him alive at six o'clock on Friday morning. A verdict of accidental death was recorded. (Accrington Observer).
