- Details of Event
- This accident occurred on the rubbish tips on the mountain side opposite the colliery. Deceased was riding on the last of a journey of six empty trains, which were being lowered by a haulage rope down a gradient of from 2 to 3 inches per yard, when he was overtaken by an empty train, which ran wild from the double parting at the top. In the collision his foot was injured. Gangrene set in, and one toe was amputated on the 28th, but he died from blood poisoning on the following day. The tram which ran down had purposely been derailed on the double parting, and had one sprag in the hind wheel. A shackler, without closing the stop-block at the lower end of the parting, proceeded to lift the tram on the rails. In the operation the sprag dropped out, and the shackler, losing control, allowed the tram to run away. He was dismissed by the Company and severely censured at the inquest.
