21 November 1927: Curious Fatality in a Coal Mine - Two men named John and Alexander Walker, residing at 15 Salamanca Street, Glasgow, were involved in a curious accident while engaged drawing a hutch of refuse in Kenmuirhill Colliery, Carmyle, belonging to the Mount Vernon Colliery (Ltd.). It appears that blasting operations had previously been going on, and it is thought that when pushing the hutch the friction of the hutch upon a detonator or other explosive in the pocket of the trousers worn by. John Walker had,caused the explosive to burst, with the result that both men were severely injured. John suffered from fracture of the thigh and lacerated wounds of the abdomen, and has since died in Glasgow Royal Infirmary. [Scotsman 24 November 1927]
