- Details of Event
- 4 August 1938: A party of twelve miners worked incessantly for two hours yesterday in a heroic but unavailing effort to release a Calderbank youth, who was trapped by a heavy fall of stone and rock from the roof of the workings at the Crow Colliery, Calderbank. The courageous efforts of the rescuers proved to be of no avail, as after they had succeeded in clearing away the debris, they found that the entombed youth was dead. The dead youth was William Waddell (20) Fir View, Calderbank, and he was employed as a repairer at the colliery. He was working at the junction of two of the colliery roads when the fall occurred, and was unable to jump clear. [Scotsman 5 August 1938]
