When working on a ledge, about 15 feet from the bottom of the quarry, a stone 3 or 4 tons in weight slid out of the apparently solid face. His comrade saw the stone coming and jumped clear, but a portion of it (about 0.5 ton) struck Varcoe in the back, causing fatal injuries.
