- Details of Event
- He was standing on a ladderway sollar in a vertical shaft, some of the sollar boards fell from under his feet and he with them, a distance of 17 feet. He succumbed to his injuries on the following day. The sollar was badly constructed. The boards which fell were the short ones extending from the end of the shaft where they were supported by a sollar piece to the side of the ladder manhole. At this end they were supported by nails driven downwards into a cleat, 6 inches by 2 inches, which did not extend from side to side of the shaft. The cleat was fixed on the under side of the longer sollar boards and supported by nails driven downwards through them. Apparently the cleat had been gradually working loose from the nails, but the defect had not been observed by the pitmen or the shaftmen. If, at the man-hole end of the short sollar boards, or a substantial sollar-piece had been fixed across the full width of the shaft and each end of it hitched into the shaft side, the accident would not have happened.
