Premature explosion of about 15lbs. of gunpowder placed in a crack, with the intention of blowing out some large blocks of granite previously shaken. He was engaged firing it with fuse, when it in some way went off, but exactly how is not known. Probably some split powder connecting with the charge was unintentionally ignited.
