- 27 March 1920: Shale Miner Killed At West Calder - On Saturday a shale miner named James Torrance, residing at Livingstone, was killed in Westwood shale pit, belonging to the Scottish Oils (Ltd.). He was at work underground, when a stone fell from the roof of the workings and struck him on the back. [Scotsman 29 March 1920]
